If you want to customize soap down to the last ingredient, cold process is a great option. Cold process soap is made by combining oils and sodium hydroxide lye. That causes a chemical reaction called saponification. Melt and pour soap has already gone through that process. Once you find your perfect recipe you can start getting creative with the designs. You get to choose the oils, colorants, scents, and more. In this video, we go over the basic tools and ingredients you need to get started. We also go over safety when working with lye, how to make soap, and how to clean up. Find more resources below! 🟢Get the soap formulator’s workbook + a free recipe booklet here → 🤍 In this soap making video I share my favorite cold process soap recipe right now. This soap is palm free and vegan, and in my humble opinion, the best handmade soap recipe😎 I often make this soap with a few variations. This time, I tried it with grapeseed oil and I really liked the end result. I also experimented with alkanet root infused olive oil to try to achieve a natural purple color. It worked out okay, but I think I could’ve used a bit more alkanet for a more intense color. Do you want to learn how to formulate your own favorite soap recipe? Check out the soap formulator’s workbook here: 🤍 Thank you for watching! Please wear proper safety equipment when making soap. My favorite cold process soap recipe: Recipe calculated with: 🤍 Oils: 192 g alkanet root infused olive oil (32%) 42 g castor oil (7%) 36 g grapeseed oil (6%) 168 g coconut oil (28%) 90 g shea butter (15%) 72 g cocoa butter (12%) Lye solution: 125 g distilled water 10 g citric acid 89.8 g sodium hydroxide (83.8 g if not using citric acid) (40% lye concentration, 5% superfat) Additives: 45 g coconut cream 10 ml fragrance oil for a light scent Cure the soap for 4-6 weeks before using it on your skin. ○ Citric acid information When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap. A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water. These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap. A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases. Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level. How much citric acid should be added to soap? Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight. How to use citric acid Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils. In this video we will be creating a purple and white soap scented with natural Lavender essential oil and topped with Lavender flowers. This cold process soap making tutorial explains many of the aspects of trace. Including clearly showing how to spot emulsion (emulsification), what false trace is, how it happens and what to do about it, the different levels of trace and when they should be used and the main causes of acceleration in cold process soap. I have tried to include as much information as I can without turning the video into some sort of epic 3-hour affair, but there will be a few things that I may not have included, for instance, I have given examples of what to use each type of trace for, not an exhaustive list of every soaping technique and the trace that works the best for them all. I try to give lots of hints and tips in all of my videos, so hopefully, you can use some of the techniques in this cold process soap making tutorial in your own soap making. I hope you enjoy the video. I'd love it if you would give me a thumbs up, subscribe to my channel and ring the notification bell this helps me to grow my channel. ☕ This soap was inspired by the creamy layers of a latte. It's scented with Caffe Latte Fragrance Oil, which features notes of espresso, cream, and oats. It will be your new go-to coffee scent! This soap also has coffee in place of distilled water. That makes it quite dark, so plenty of titanium dioxide is used to achieve a lighter shade in the top layer. It creates a lather with a faint white color - feel free to use less if you'd like to avoid this. Don’t worry about the lye overheating, because coffee does not contain sugar. Once the lye has been added to the coffee, allow it to cool as normal. ☕ You can find the full instructions and ingredients for this Latte Soap Project here: 🤍 Ground coffee gives these bars a scrubby feel. 🌿Learn to make soap with fresh ingredients: 🤍 🌿Learn to formulate your own soap recipes here: 🤍 In this video I share with you how to make cold process aloe vera soap with fresh + homemade aloe gel. Thank you for watching! This aloe vera soap recipe uses a 6% superfat & 35% lye concentration. The lye amount has been adjusted for 2% citric acid. Step by step: Step 1 - make the aloe vera gel Step 2 - make the natural green colorant Step 3 - measure the oils Step 4 - make the citric acid solution Step 5 - prepare the essential oils Step 6 - make the aloe vera lye solution Step 7 - make the soap 🟢Learn to formulate your own customized soap recipes here: 🤍 🟢Citric acid information: When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. This is a great recipe for a bar of soap that everyone in the family can use. It is moisturizing, has lots of lather, and is gentle on the skin. If you want a printable version of the recipe, grab it here: 🤍 Beginner Soap Makers, Read This First: 🤍 The Best Cold Process Soap Recipe: 11 oz. coconut oil 9 oz. olive oil 9 oz. palm oil 2 oz. sweet almond oil 4 oz. castor oil 4 oz. avocado oil 2 oz. mango butter 5.83 oz of lye 10-15 oz. water 3 T. of fragrance (for a strong scent, vary this to your preferences) Instructions: 1. Using a digital scale, measure out the lye and water in separate glass containers. Combine them by adding the lye to the water. (Remember: snow floats on the lake.). Stir until the lye dissolves. The temperature will shoot up. Place this in a safe place to cool. 2. While the lye solution is cooling, measure out the oils and butters and combine them in a large stainless pot. Melt them over low heat and heat them up to 130-140 degrees. Set them aside to cool. 3. After 2 hours, check the temperature of both solutions. They should be around 110 degrees. (A range of 100-120 is fine.). If not, allow them to cool longer. 4. Prepare your mold and measure out any fragrance or color you will be adding. (For best blending of colors, mix some color into a few drops of melted oils.). If using sodium lactate, add it to the lye water at this time. 5. Pour the water and lye solution into the pot with the melted oils. Blend with a stick blender until thin trace is reached. The soap batter will noticeable thicken and a trail of soap will sit on top of the liquid rather than immediately sinking in. (This will take about 1 minute.). Add the color and fragrance and stir by hand. 6. Immediately pour the soap batter into the mold. Place in a turned off oven or wrap with blankets to insulate the soap. 7. After 24 hours of curing, unmold and cut into bars. The bars may seem slightly soft but will harden considerably during the curing process. Allow to cure at least 3 weeks in a well-ventilated place. Formulating your own cold process soap recipes is easy! In this video, Bramble Berry CEO and Founder, Anne-Marie Faiola, goes over the basics of formulating cold process soap recipes. To create your own recipe, start by choosing your base oils. You can use each one around 20-30%. For the remaining portion, consider what you’d like the bar to feel like. Do you want it to be super moisturizing, have a nice thick lather, or to be hard and long lasting? How you want your soap to feel and look will guide you in choosing your oils. You can never go wrong with a 34/33/33 ratio. That’s 34% olive oil, 33% coconut oil, and 33% palm oil. They’re commonly used because they complement each other well. Palm oil acts as a secondary lathering agent and hardens the soap, coconut oil is cleansing and produces big bubbles, and olive oil is moisturizing and gives bars a silky feeling.
