Can a fresh green leaf change properties of water? Especially when this leaf is under a metal sheet? Are two equal DVDs still equal when one of them has cafe beans + laser light on its surface? Can a light in a coil impact cosmetics? There are no clear answers to these questions, but some of them can be revealed with a new measurement approach for ultraweak interactions - the dpH meter.

We were inspired to develop the Resilience Shield model after witnessing the markedly different reactions that our colleagues had to stressors such as combat. However, it was critical to us that this model was based on something more than our anecdotal observations. Accordingly, we have invested years of academic research into the Resilience Shield, including an ongoing body of research conducted in conjunction with the University of Western Australia (UWA), funded through the award of an Entrepreneur’s Program grant by the Australian Federal Government’s Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources. Our lead research partner is Dr Lies Notebaert, a PhD psychologist who specialises in experimental-cognitive research into the links between cognition, emotion and behaviour. The primary tool for the collection of data to support this research is the Resilience Survey. Incorporating a number of existing, peer-reviewed screens, the Resilience Survey measures the current state of a participant's resilience and provides feedback on their relative strengths and weaknesses in terms of overall resilience, and within each of the Resilience Shield layers. Participants are also able to opt in to receive a comprehensive resilience report. You can access the Resilience Survey at 🤍resilienceshield.com.
Winter field season for our Lynx and Fire project is off to the races! We have an amazing crew of biologists that have been following lynx tracks through the woods to collect fine scale habitat data and this past week we started setting live-traps to capture lynx and fit them with GPS collars. Now one week into our trapping efforts, we are thrilled to let you know that we caught and collared our first lynx! This beautiful young male received ear tag #01 and is now off doing his job for the project: collecting data everywhere he goes. We are celebrating this first capture in a big way, but still have a lot of work to do. Our goal this winter is to catch roughly 10% of the current lynx population here in the North Cascades, which is estimated at less than 50 individuals. But to do this work, we have to have reliable snowmobiles. Without them, we simply can not get out to our field sites in the high mountains above the Methow. Currently, we are relying on 25 year old snowmobiles, which are starting to show their age. Trips to the shop for repairs seriously hinder our ability to conduct this important work and so to fund the purchase of much needed reliable snowmobiles, we are excited to bring you along for our field work this winter by launching the Trap a Cat fundraising campaign! Now through the end of our winter 2023 field season, which run through March 31st, you can sponsor a trap set (i.e., a trap deployment in a location where we think we have a change to catch a lynx!) to help support this research. For each $100 donated, we'll deploy a trap set with your name on it, and any time we collar a lynx, we'll announce who's trap caught the cat. In addition, all donors will receive a picture of their set(s) and exclusive behind-the-scenes field updates! Learn more at: 🤍homerange.org/trap-a-cat Video thanks to Clara Hoffman!
In 2010, stillbirth rates in the UK were higher than most other high-income countries. There were gaps in antenatal care and variability in the services available for bereaved parents across the country. As a result, NHS England declared its aim to halve stillbirths in the UK by 2025. - The Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle is used across NHS England. - 2.5 million women were reached through Tommy's #sleeponside and #movementsmatter campaigns. - 28 Rainbow Clinics now operate with two in development. Kalea Benner, Director of Undergraduate Studies at the UK College of Social Work, conducts research on training social workers, doctors and nurses to identify substance misuse. She uses a training model called SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment). The screening piece uses a medical model to identify alcohol and drug use, and the brief intervention utilizes a readiness ruler (from 1 to 10) to determine how ready clients are to change behaviors. For more tips about gay open relationships, visit our website: 🤍 We recently sent out a survey to our email list to get some data about the kinds of relationships queer folks are engaging in. We got about 500 responses. According to our data, 60% of the folks surveyed are in open relationships, and of those 60%, about a third of them are in what’s known as “don’t ask, don’t tell” relationships -where the relationship is open, but there are no discussions of hookups outside the relationship. Gay Therapy Center founder + director Adam Blum talks about why “don’t ask, don’t tell” policies are problematic in open relationships and what you can do instead.

Learn about Moore’s Law and our research on CPU performance. In this clip, the 2nd in a 3-part series, watch Astrid Wynne and Rich Kenny of Techbuyer explain their IEEE backed research, plus an overview of the set of experiments and findings. In the datacentre sector, there is a commonly held belief that replacing servers with new generations will necessarily bring efficiency gains. This assumption is derived from Moore’s Law, which suggests that the compute power of chips will roughly double every 2 years. The recent slowdown in Moore’s Law, however, calls this practice into question. Our research explored this across hundreds of laboratory experiments. It measured the efficiency of new vs remanufactured servers with different hardware configurations and component-level upgrades. It found that, since 2015, the efficiency gains offered by new generations are limited. As a result, component-level upgrades (e.g., RAM and storage) can make older servers more efficient and performant than base versions of newer generations. To learn about the Right to Repair movement, watch Part 1 here: 🤍 To learn about the complexities of the global supply chain, watch Part 3 here: 🤍

Extinktionslernen bezeichnet Neulernen. ヅ Find out more: sfb1280.ruhr-uni-bochum.de Dies ist ein Beitrag zu Fast Forward Science 2020, 🤍fastforwardscience.de
