The concert finale will again be our contemporary setting of the African-American spiritual “Go Tell It On The Mountain.”
Glenn Miller and his Orchestra performing "In The Mood", released originally in 1941. "In The Mood" is one of the best-known musical themes of the 1940s and one of the big band era's most recognizable songs. The song was the biggest hit of 1940 WHC and of Miller's career. The song went through several others' hands before it ended up with Miller. This song was based on a song called "Tar Paper Stomp" which was recorded in 1930 by Joseph "Wingy" Manone, who was a bandleader from New Orleans. This song was written by the Tin Pan Alley composers Joe Garland (music) and Andy Razaf (lyrics). "In The Mood" is an expression that indicates a desire to have sex. It was pretty innocent at the time, but a little racy. Miller recorded it in 1939, and the song became wildly popular in early 1940, shortly before Billboard began publishing its "Music Popularity Chart." This makes it hard to gauge the song's appeal at the time, but it helped Miller become the top bandleader in the world - in that first Billboard chart, he held down three of the Top 10 places. Glenn Miller was an American big band trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader. He was the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1943, leading one of the best-known big bands. Miller's notable recordings include "Moonlight Serenade," "In the Mood," "Tuxedo Junction," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "A String of Pearls," "At Last," "(I've Got a Gal In) Kalamazoo," "American Patrol," and "Little Brown Jug." "In The Mood" is a well-known and iconic song from the big band era, and the biggest hit of Glenn Miller's career. Miller was one of the most successful bandleaders of his time, and his recordings continue to be popular today. In April 2011, Wynton Marsalis launched “Hidden in Plain View: Meanings in American Music,” a three-year performance and lecture series at Harvard University. The six lecture series began with “Music as Metaphor,” an interpretation of the many unobserved symbols in American music and their illumination of the democratic process, and featured performances by Marsalis alongside Ali Jackson (drums), Dan Nimmer (piano), Walter Blanding (tenor sax), Carlos Henriquez (bass), James Chirillo (guitar and banjo), and Mark O’Connor (violin).
Hi there! I'm (finally!) back with a new music theory related video explaining what is swing, a form of popular music developed in the United States that dominated in the 1930s and 1940s. The amazing danceable swing style of big bands and bandleaders such as Benny Goodman was the dominant form of American popular music from 1935 to 1946, a period known as the swing era. You will recognize "In the Mood", a popular big band-era #1 hit recorded by American bandleader Glenn Miller. It topped the charts for 13 straight weeks in 1940 in the U.S. In 1999, National Public Radio (NPR) included the song recording on RCA Bluebird on the NPR 100, the list of "The 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century". Then in 2004, the original song recording on RCA Victor was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry which consists of recordings that are "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Hopefully I made it clear, understandable but, above all, fun! :) Enjoy! The name came from the emphasis on the off–beat, or weaker pulse. Swing bands usually featured soloists who would improvise on the melody over the arrangement. The danceable swing style of big bands and bandleaders such as Benny Goodman was the dominant form of American popular music from 1935 to 1946, known as the swing era. The verb "to swing" is also used as a term of praise for playing that has a strong groove or drive. Notable musicians of the swing era include Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Harry James, Lionel Hampton, Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw. Swing has its roots in 1920s dance music ensembles, which began using new styles of written arrangements, incorporating rhythmic innovations pioneered by Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter and other jazzmen. During the World War II era Swing began to decline in popularity, and after war, bebop and jump blues gained popularity. Swing blended with other genres to create new musical styles. In country music, artists such as Jimmie Rodgers, Moon Mullican, Milton Brown and Bob Wills introduced elements of swing along with blues to create a genre called "western swing". Famous roma guitarist Django Reinhardt created gypsy swing music and composed the gypsy swing standard "Minor Swing". #Swing #Jazz #Lounge

Rick Stitzel's easy version is true to the Basie style, featuring tutti ensemble scoring along with a short solo for any sax followed by a solo for any trumpet. A great lesson in swing style for young players. HL07013732 HL07013733

In the mid-1930s, Goodman led one of the most popular musical groups in the United States. His concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938 is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music. Goodman's bands started the careers of many jazz musicians. During an era of racial segregation, he led one of the first integrated jazz groups. He performed nearly to the end of his life while exploring an interest in classical music. #bennygoodman #singsingsing #swing
