One of the more tiresome complaints I’ve heard online about Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power show is that it’s pushing a woke agenda—cramming said agenda down our collective throats in an attempt to push some leftist identity politics on the masses. This is a silly critique for the most part, driven by idle speculation and a fandom that has been utterly overwhelmed by culture wars and endless politics. There used to be a time, not so long ago, when we could enjoy movies and TV shows and video games without a constant barrage of politically charged opinions, angry click-hungry YouTube videos, and massive, charged debates on social media and forums. Or maybe I’m looking at the past with rosy-tinted glasses. All I know is that when I went to school in the 90s’ most of my classmates and I didn’t really care who was president, didn’t really talk about the election, and never argued about the political messaging in Beavis and Butthead or Seinfeld. Now, I understand that this cuts both ways. There has been a concerted effort by those peddling identity politics to get that message—or ‘The Message’ as it’s come to be known in some circles—into games and shows and movies, often at the expense of quality. Rings of Power is a controversial show. Rings of Power has proven itself to be one of the most contentious shows in recent history. The level of hatred and vitriol directed at it feels unprecedented for a show so early in its run. After watching Rings of Power, I came away thinking that it was mid. To me the show was not the demon spawn many claim it to be but, rather, it was a fairly middling fantasy show that had poor pacing and stunning visuals. It was not very good but neither was it the worst show ever created which is what you would be led to believe from all of the hate pieces down about it. So that got me wondering, why is this nothingburger of a show so hated? I knew part of the answer right away and that is the fact that Rings of Power is a poor adaptation of Tolkien's work. Amazon’s Rings of Power has recently debuted to massive viewership and decent reviews. The show tells a prequel story to the Lord of the Rings focusing on how the rings were created and how Sauron rose to power. Conservatives had it out for this show for a long time due to it having a diverse cast for its elves and dwarfs. Many have said that it spits in the face of Tolkien’s legacy. Many liberals have leapt to its defence painting Tolkien as a liberal progressive who hated bigotry. While the backlash is ridiculous, painting Tolkien as some sort of liberal is equally absurd. Tolkien was a traditionalist Catholic monarchist, he hated socialism and support Franco in the 1930s. He constantly rejected any leftist reading of the Lord of the Rings by left wing university students in the 1960s.
