If your ever in need of a Zener Diode that isn't in your inventory, sometimes you can remedy the problem by soldering Two or more of them in a series until they add up to the needed voltage. When a friend told me about this technique I was sceptical that this could work, but after trying it myself I was happy to see that it does. If you try this just makes sure you have the polarity correct and the wattage of the Diodes. The wattage will not add up as the zener voltage does. The wattage will only be as high as the lowest wattage diode you use.

In this video, I will explain the working principle of the zener diode, which is used for voltage stabilization in electronic circuits. Zener diode is a diode that keeps the voltage applied to its pins constant. When zener diodes are connected to the circuit in the right direction, it works like a normal silicon diode. In other words, they start to flow current after 0.7V. But they are not used that way. They are used in reverse connection to the circuit. When connected in reverse, they do not flow current up to a certain voltage value. This voltage is called break or zener voltage. After the breaking voltage, they start to flow current and the voltage value on them remains constant at the breaking voltage value. In fact, we can say that it is a diode that flows current in both directions. They do the job of a voltage regulator. Their color is usually orange, with a black stripe at the cathode tips. The symbol is like this. Now let's look at some examples to better understand the working principle. Series connection means a side by side connection having one common junction. While Parallel connection means the components are connected across each other, having two common points. Connecting diodes in series will increase the forward voltage of the resultant diode and will cause an open circuit until peak inverse voltage (smallest diode) is applied on total resultant. While connecting diodes in parallel will increase the current carrying capacity of the diode and will not give a resultant diode conduction in both sides. Series Connection of Diodes What could really be so difficult in connecting diodes in series? Let's look into this matter in a bit more detail and consider the following situation: what we need is to rectify line voltage, but the only thing we have is 50 V diodes. Now, in what manner do we connect them and how many would we need? The question couldn't be easier - we would need 5 diodes connected in series, it's as easy as that...but not really. What we need to look at is not the net value of 220-250V, but the peak one, that is about 310 V, which would mean that our circuit needs to consist of 7 diodes. Besides, we also need to have by-pass elements, for low frequencies - balancing resistance only, and for elimination of HF interference and protection of the p-n junction from HF - also capacitors. Now, it is the issue of selecting such components we would like to discuss in detail: Balancing resistance needs to be there to ensure that the voltage applied to each of the diodes is identical. Otherwise, the difference in their back resistance might cause the voltage on one of the diodes to exceed the limit, which would in turn result in the breakdown of the component. The voltage on the rest of the diodes would then increase, the next diode would also breakdown, followed by the next one and the next one until the entire circuit would burn out (this process would not take longer than a split second). The resistors connected in parallel to each of the diodes are in fact connected in series to each other and form a voltage divider. This prevents voltage increase on the diodes if one of them breaks down because of a manufacturing defect. Now, by-pass capacitors need to be there to prevent momentary surge overvoltage and to eliminate the so-called "white" noise generated by the diodes. In the situation like ours, when power is supplied from a 50 Hz alternating current mains, such capacitors are not a required. But for operation in pulse modes, at high frequency and in circuits where noise is unacceptable, by-pass capacitors are a certain must. The easiest way to select the right match would be to install a bypass resistor with such rating, under which the reverse current of the diode would be equal to the current that flows through the resistor. The capacity of the capacitor would then need to be equal to the junction capacitance. It is also possible to install resistance based on the following logic - 100 kOhm per each ...
