One year on from the earthquakes that devastated the country in April 2015 International Organization for Migration (IOM) has released “Foundation of Hope: Year One of Relief, Recovery, and Reconstruction in Nepal,” a documentary dedicated to the people of Nepal in appreciation of their compassion, hope and determination. The film features a few of the remarkable personal stories of the 1.8 million Nepalis that IOM’s earthquake relief programmes helped. It was directed by Nepali award winning filmmaker Ganesh Panday and an all-Nepali crew with an original score donated by award-winning composer Gary S. Scott.
The decade of conflict in Nepal, from 1996 to 2006, caused the disappearance of over 1,300 people. Today, their families are still waiting for information on the fate of their loved ones. Hope for information may be all that families have to relieve the anguish caused by uncertainty.

The death toll from Nepal's earthquake has now exceeded 5,800 and many bodies are still being recovered from the rubble. Decomposing bodies under the rubble have increased the threat of disease in the quake-struck areas. But amid the despair, there are glimmers of hope. A woman and a teenage boy have been pulled out alive after being trapped under the rubble for five days. Al Jazeera's Mohammed Jamjoom has their story.
A team from the Queen's Gurkha Engineers have been helping the people of Nepal to rebuild, following the earthquakes that struck the country last April. More than 8,000 people were killed, and close to half-a-million buildings were destroyed in the wake of the tremors. One village has seen work completed on new schools and homes, but across the region reconstruction has been slow. After the earthquake, nearly 300 students from Pachowk Secondary School were forced to study in temporary shelters. The heat from the tarpaulin, the noise from the near-by classroom, the sound of rain, the mud & rain all were hampering their studies. The widow of an ex-Gurkha, 80-year-old Mana Maya Ghale, used to live in a two storey house but it was completely destroyed in the earthquakes. Her neighbour Thakali Kancha said: "I was in the other house sorting out the firewood. I saw that house tumbling. The whole house was destroyed." After the Area Welfare Centre alerted the Gurkha Welfare Trust, the situation started to look more positive. In December 2015, members of the Queen's Gurkha Engineers arrived in Pachowk and started work immediately. Within 25 days they constructed Pachowk Secondary School and in six weeks they built the houses for ex-Gurkha wives Mana Maya Ghale & Padam Maya Gurung. This video, produced by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI; 🤍) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD; 🤍), provides highlights of how research in the uplands of Nepal is helping poor farmers reduce hunger and poverty through increased rice yields and increased production of vegetables for cash incomes. Script: Snow capped mountains, green valleys, peaceful rivers, and rich culture. This is Nepal.not only a feast for the eyes but also home to thousands of upland and lowland farmers who depend on rice for their food need. Many of these farmers are economically and socially marginalized, and are often the poorest. Traditionally, Nepalese hill farmers rely on rice production for subsistence. Most of them grow traditional varieties. The average rice yield in Nepal has been around two and a half tons per hectare. Upland rice farming is highly labor-intensive and taxing, especially for women. Besides their household chores, women do most of the farm work such as taking care of animals, weeding, drying, and milling. The lack of new modern varieties, quality seeds, and better crop management technologies, and limited access to public services, are just some of the many concerns of upland farmers. The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD; 🤍) provided funding to the International Rice Research Institute to implement a project in Nepal. The project is called Managing Rice Landscapes in the Marginal Uplands for Household Food Security and Environmental Sustainability 🤍 In the mountainous areas of Nepal, farmers grow rice in both upland and lowland fields. The project is focused on developing improved technologies for managing these rice landscapes. The project has adopted a farmer participatory approach. Farmers are highly involved from the beginning, during implementation, and in the decision-making process. Research on potential technologies is conducted at village-based field research sites. It is done with the collaboration of the farmers and national research organizations. The project in Nepal collaborates with the Lamjung Campus in Sundarbazar, of the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Sciences or IAAS; and the National Rice Research Program, or NRRP, of the Nepal Agricultural Research Council in Kathmandu. In this video, we shall see the technologies that were identified, tested, and disseminated under the project. It will also show how the farmers benefit from these technologies. IAAS researchers, with the collaboration of the farmers, identified and tested several suitable upland and lowland rice varieties. From these varieties, farmers chose Radha-32 and IR55435-5. These farmers came from several villages in Lamjung, Gorkha, and Tanahun districts. Radha 32 can be grown in both the lowland and upland . Another variety, IR55435-5, has consistently outperformed the preferred local varieties. Farmers like it because of its higher number of filled grains and straw yield. Farm animals like the soft straw. The straw feeds farm animals, such as cattle and buffalo, during the dry season. From the IAAS-assisted areas, we have seen and heard the reasons why farmers preferred and adopted the varieties mentioned compared with others. Let us now travel to East Nepal. The National Rice Research Program-assisted area of the project is in Mahottari District, which has two research sites—Patu and Bhapasi. Here, farmers preferred NR-601-5, RHS-397, BM 9855, and Hardinath-1. Farmers chose these varieties for their higher yield, good eating quality, and suitability to a rice-wheat cropping pattern. BM 9855 and NR-601-5 also perform well in rainfed lowland and irrigated conditions. The ability to grow spring rice is a blessing for farmers in the lower hills because they can grow two crops in one year—one in spring and one in the summer. Hardinath-1 is the most popular spring-season variety in the Churia Hills. The variety is popular because it matures early, which allows growing a second crop. Hardinath-1 is also high yielding, and has good milling and eating qualities. It is also tolerant of drought and major rice diseases. The project distributed Hardinath-1 seeds to farmers in Bhapsi and Patu villages. The seeds were also distributed to farmers in seven neighboring districts with the collaboration of the district agricultural development offices for varietal demonstration and wider dissemination. Good-quality seeds are important inputs of production for farmers. Farmers rely on good seeds for their next harvest....... The black boxes of the ill-fated Yeti Airlines aircraft that crashed in Pokhara, Nepal, on Sunday morning have been recovered. The Nepalese Army has handed over the cockpit voice and flight data recorder to civil aviation authorities to determine what caused the aircraft to hit the ground just seconds before the landing at the recently inaugurated Pokhara International Airport. 68 passengers and 4 crew members were on board. At least 68 bodies have been recovered, while four more people are still missing. AFP reported that the hope of finding any survivors is nil. What a day exploring Kathmandu, this morning had a lot of rain, but that didn't stop me from having a good ole day! Got to show you this $17 Newari style aribnb that was city center of Kathmandu. I was really impressed with this place and thought it was such a good location and charming spot! I then headed into the local markets to see the charming city and eat some local breakfast! This breakfast was full of Sel roti, malpua, and other delicious little treats that I love to have in Nepal with some Masala Tea. After this it was back to exploring but the rain started so I had to hop into a coffee shop real quick. I love this coffee shop, it's been up and running a long time and has some of the best coffee. I was there awhile so I got pretty hungry and had to go get some Mo:Mo in Nepal. This place I couldn't pass because it was named Delicious Mo:Mo. And yes they were with a lot of sauce as well! Finally I headed to the market and found some people from a smaller area of Nepal selling shoes. Luckily, they had my size and I got some comfortable walking shoes. I decided to pay full price because the couple was way too nice. Then I headed to Thamel but had a fail when trying to find a type of shirt my friend had. Of course, I had to try some hot hot hot chilis in before finishing my day. They will be perfect for taking around with me in Nepal!!!
