This video describes about Shear Force and Shear Stress generated in structures and ways to resist it. Many examples are used in this video to describe how shear forces act in structures such as pile footings, isolated footings, flat slab with drop, beams, retaining walls etc. This video also talks about the cracks produced in beam due to bending and shear stresses and how reinforcement is provided to resist them. 📰 Read in blog format 👇 🤍 🌐Other Places: Website 👇 🤍 LinkedIn 👇 🤍 Instagram 👇 🤍 Facebook 👇 🤍 👀MUST WATCH VIDEOS👀 ⏩Reinforced Concrete⏪ 👇Raft Foundations 🤍 👇Retaining Walls 🤍 👇Concrete Stairs 🤍 👇Types of Building Foundations 🤍 👇RCC Building Components 🤍 👇Isolated Footings 🤍 👇Concrete Beam Reinforcement 🤍 ⏩Structural Drawings⏪ 👇Foundation Drawings 🤍 👇Column Drawings 🤍 ⏩Basic Mechanics⏪ 👇Types of Supports 🤍 👇Types of Beams 🤍 👇Torsion 🤍 ⏩Case Studies⏪ 👇Taipei 101 🤍 👇Avengers Tower 🤍
This video is an introduction to shear force and bending moment diagrams. What are Shear Forces and Bending Moments? Shear forces and bending moments are resultants which are used to conveniently represent the internal forces that develop within a beam when external loads are acting on it. The internal forces that exist within the beam will depend on how the beam is loaded, and how it is supported. Beams are typically loaded by concentrated forces, distributed forces, and concentrated moments. Typical beam supports include pinned supports, roller supports, and fully fixed supports. How Do We Draw the Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams? Determining shear forces and bending moments along the length of a beam typically involves three steps: - First we draw the free body diagram of our beam. - Next we use the equilibrium equations to calculate the reaction forces and moments. - Finally, we cut our beam at a single location and use the equilibrium equations to determine the shear force and bending moment at that location. We repeat this process for each location along the beam, and draw the result on our shear force and bending moment diagrams. 💻 Read the article version of this video here: 🤍 - The Efficient Engineer is a channel aimed at mechanical and civil engineers. Description: In this introductory lesson, we'll talk about the importance of shear walls in building construction and why they are essential in resisting lateral forces such as wind and earthquakes. We'll demonstrate the three forces that wind or seismic exerts on the building, and we'll show you how shear walls on either side, the roof, and even the floor system help to distribute those forces. We'll also explain what racking, base shear, and overturning are and why preventing them is crucial in preventing building collapse. We'll show you how to transfer the inherent rigidity of wood structural panels to the wall to make it more resistant to lateral forces, and we'll discuss the different types of wood sheathing you can use to achieve this. Join us to learn more about shear walls and how they can help protect your building from natural disasters. In this video we explore bending and shear stresses in beams. A bending moment is the resultant of bending stresses, which are normal stresses acting perpendicular to the beam cross-section. We can easily derive an equation for these bending stresses by observing how a beam deforms for a case of pure bending. This equation is know as the flexure formula. Next we look at shear stresses, which act parallel to the beam cross-section, and can be represented by a shear force. These vertical shear stresses can cause horizontal shear failure in beams, because they result in complementary horizontal shear stresses, which develop to maintain equilibrium. Finally we look at how we can apply the shear stress equation to thin-walled open sections like the I beam, and how shear stress appears to "flow" through the cross-section. - ERRATA: - The moment shown at 07:38 is drawn in the wrong direction. - The shear stress profile shown at 11:41 is incorrect - the correct profile has the maximum shear stress at the edges of the cross-section, and the minimum shear stress at the centre. - If you would like to support the channel, please consider becoming a Patron - 🤍 This will allow me to create more high quality videos covering a range of engineering topics. - The Efficient Engineer is a channel aimed at mechanical and civil engineers. Wool was once one of New Zealand’s most exported products. But thanks to trade wars and synthetic fabrics, wool prices have plummeted. What is the shear strength of soil? This is a key question for ground engineers and is vital to any design project. The reason it’s so important is that at some point, everything that is built makes contact with the ground – and transfers load into it. Understanding what influences the strength of a soil and quantifying it, are always the first steps to be taken. Soil strength is used in soil mechanics to describe the force to be overcome in order to fail a soil by shear. Soil strength depends on many elements, one fundamental consideration being the type of soil. The particles of most soils are essentially incompressible, and soil masses have no tensile strength. Soils fail when one block of soil moves relative to another block and the soil particles at the failure plane move over each other. This is what is known as shear. We go through breaking a beam into segments, and then we learn about the relationships between shear force and moment diagrams to draw our graphs. You can learn how to draw a moment diagram just by looking at a shear force diagram, and vice versa. Using 4 examples, you will gain a good understanding of how to do this by finding shear forces, moments, reactions at the ends, and much more. 🔹 Learn About Internal Loadings: 🤍 🔹 Distributed Loads and How to solve them: 🤍 🔹 Everything to know about moments: 🤍 🔹 Solving for support reactions: 🤍 If you found these videos helpful and you really want to give something, it's very much appreciated.
